The Pacific Puppet Palooza is a family friendly four day festival that provides to each participant:
4 workshop sessions, 9 performances, 6 social events, 8 meals and countless encounters with puppeteers and puppetry fans from the Pacific Northwest and around the world. |
Imagine a beautiful tree lined level campus with a gorgeous theater, good sized classrooms, comfy dorms (bring your own bedding, pillows and towels, and maybe a fan - dorms are not air conditioned but the lobby and all the classrooms and auditorium are - scrumptious eco-friendly food including vegan and vegetarian options, PUPPETS and puppeteers from all over. Western Oregon University's picturesque campus is located in Monmouth, 20 minutes from the state capital Salem in the heart of the Willamette Valley’s wine country. Less than 2 hours drive from Portland, Eugene and the Pacific Coast. Spend four days immersed in puppet related activities including performances, workshops, and exhibits.
Vans available to charter from Portland and Eugene airports. SW Airlines flies LA to Eugene.
Amtrak Train Portland to Salem runs about $15. Cherriots bus runs from the Salem Amtrak to the WOU campus (weekdays only). Free on-campus parking for attendees driving their car to the Festival.

Admission to these performances will be free of charge, and the public is invited.

Oregon Shadow Theatre is a collaboration of shadow puppeteer Deb Chase and musician and actor Mick Doherty.
At the Festival they will present a performance of "Jack and the Dragon" in the outdoor amphitheater at Main Street Park just a few blocks south of the Western Oregon University campus. This is one of the many Appalachian tales about Jack. With colorful shadow puppets and live banjo and dulcimer music, watch Jack enjoying a barn dance as well as keeping his community safe from a giant hog, a unicorn, and even a dragon.

In this fairy tale, after swatting 7 flies at one whack, Jack is hired by the King to hunt some pesky varmints, like a Giant Hog and a Unicorn, before he has to face the meanest varmint of all. He still finds time to kick up his heels with the King's daughter at a barn dance. Colorful shadow puppets, live old time American banjo and dulcimer music and a barrel of laughs send Jack and the Dragon running down the hollow.any stories about Jack and his Ma in the Appalachian Mountains.
